Oil and Mexican National Identity

As we continue to think about the theme of “lo mexicano”–as it pops up in the history of 20th century Mexican philosophy– it helps to keep in mind that the reason why this became a philosophical problem is related more to a seemingly desperate need for authenticity within a complex and totalizing historical drama than it did with a narcissistic desire to formulate a national identity that would settle, once and for all, the question of who’s who and who’s what. I came across this short piece this morning that reinforces this idea and which is worth thinking about as we make Mexican philosophy an object of study in this strange and far, far away land that is los Estados Unidos de America.
