One Year Ago Today

So it looks like it’s been exactly one year since our last post, and while there is no excuse for the long pause, I could give you a long explanation. But rather than attempt to explain (or excuse), I thought it would be better to start back up with some updates on what we’ve been up to and what to expect.

The biggest announcement is that Carlos and I are putting the finishing touches on the Journal of Mexican Philosophy (JMP), which we will launch in a week or two. That’s right, you heard me, a journal dedicated to producing and disseminating original scholarship and translations related to all things Mexican philosophy, in Spanish and English, and by our colleagues in both the English- and Spanish-speaking worlds. We will send out another announcement soon – again, in a week or two – once the first issue is live!

We have also been hard at work on various projects. I’m currently working on a critical introduction to the philosophy of Samuel Ramos, which will include a full, original translation of Hacia un nuevo humanismo. I recently completed the translation of Toward a New Humanism with my good friend Aurelia Valero Pie of UNAM, and I am chipping away at the introduction.

Carlos, as always, is in the middle of writing too many books, including one that applies major concepts from Mexican philosophy to contemporary philosophical discussions. I’ll let him tell you more about that soon.

There are also various other events/activities that indicate that Mexican philosophy is alive and well. Clinton Tolley (UCSD) and I are both teaching full courses dedicated to the history of Mexican philosophy. Manuel Vargas (UCSD), too, is completing his own monograph on Mexican philosophy, which we are all looking forward to. Aurelia Valero Pie is organizing a symposium on the philosophy of Luis Villoro (November 2022) in Mexico City. And our monthly reading group on Mexican philosophy is still going strong. (If you’re interested in joining, please contact me. We meet the first Wednesday of the month, and are currently reading through major texts of 19th century Mexican philosophy.)
